Mr Wyn Williams, Head of Education Services visited Johnstown Primary School on Monday, December 19th to present the school with their Read Write Inc school of excellence award. Johnstown is the first school in Carmarthenshire to achieve model school status.
Read, Write, Inc is an inclusive literacy programme which was devised to teach synthetic phonics quickly, and raise the standard of children’s reading and writing.
Read, Write, Inc was introduced into Johnstown school in November 2010 after all teaching and support staff received training. Pupils are taught how to sound blend words for reading and writing at the same time as developing handwriting skills and spelling. The scheme further develops pupils to become accomplished, confident readers and writers across the curriculum.
Since implementation Read, Write, Inc has proved to be very successful throughout the school, with learners from Nursery to Year 6 showing greater confidence and enthusiasm in literacy. Staff are delighted that Johnstown was awarded Model school Status in November. Head Teacher, Mrs. Helen Starkey and Read Write Inc managers, Miss Beth Hickman and Miss Delyth Williams are thrilled with its positive impact on raising standards in this very important key skill due to the commitment and dedication of all pupils and staff.
